Arab Leadership University's MSc Sustainability & ESG Management Is Built Around the New Reporting Standards

Arab Leadership University has updated the MSc Sustainability & ESG Management so that graduates can do the work that new disclosure regimes actually require: measure, report and defend an organisation's sustainability position without overstating it.

The curriculum covers climate science and planetary boundaries, ESG strategy and materiality, sustainability accounting and reporting standards, sustainable finance and transition risk, the circular economy and Scope 3 emissions, environmental law and global policy, social sustainability and just transition, and change leadership for net-zero transitions. A module on ESG data, assurance and greenwashing risk is compulsory.

"The demand from employers has shifted," the programme leader said. "Two years ago they wanted someone who could write a sustainability vision. Now they want someone who can produce a disclosure that survives an auditor and a regulator."

The capstone is an ESG strategy project for a real organisation: a materiality assessment, a measurement plan, a reporting approach aligned to a named standard, and an honest account of where the data is weak. Students defend it to a panel that includes practitioners who have signed off real disclosures.

Yousef Khalil, a software engineer in Manama moving into climate work, said the accounting modules were the reason he chose ALU over shorter courses. "I did not need more motivation about the climate," he said. "I needed to know how Scope 3 is actually calculated and where the assumptions hide."

The programme is delivered online with zero tuition. Data tools are provided on the platform. Live sessions run across time zones and are recorded.

Applicants need a first degree or relevant professional experience. The programme suits people in finance, operations, corporate affairs, engineering and policy who have picked up sustainability responsibilities and want to do them properly.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. ALU will not pretend a programme is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.
