Inside the Arab Leadership University MBA Capstone: A Real Organisation, a Real Decision, a Defended Recommendation

The Master of Business Administration at Arab Leadership University is an 18-month, 42-credit programme built for people who already lead. It runs fully online with zero tuition. Whichever mode a student chooses, the programme ends the same way: a capstone strategic consulting project that has to improve a real organisation, usually the student's own.

The capstone is not an essay about strategy. It is a defended recommendation. Students scope a genuine decision their organisation faces — a pricing change, a market entry, a restructuring, an operating-model shift — gather evidence, model the options, and present a recommendation to faculty and invited practitioners who are allowed to push back hard.

Faculty have published what separates the grades. A pass shows a competent process: a defined problem, relevant analysis, a defensible recommendation. A distinction shows judgement under uncertainty: the student names what they do not know, quantifies the risk of being wrong, and still commits to a course of action with a monitoring plan.

Noura Al-Fahad, a supply-chain analyst in Jeddah, used the capstone to redesign a monthly reporting cycle that was consuming three weeks of management time. "The analysis was the easy part," they said. "The hard part was recommending that we stop producing two reports that a senior person liked. I had to defend that in the room."

The taught core that leads into the capstone covers financial decision-making, managerial economics, marketing, operations and supply chain, strategy, business ethics and governance, and business analytics. Electives let students go deeper in digital transformation, family enterprise, healthcare management or public-service leadership. Assessment throughout is by case analysis, financial models and leadership reflections, not trivia tests.

ALU publishes anonymised capstone themes each year so applicants can see the standard before they apply. Recent projects include a hospital procurement redesign, a fintech pricing model, an NGO's move from grant dependence to earned income, and a family manufacturer's succession plan.

Applicants should show managerial responsibility, a capacity for quantitative work, and a specific problem they intend to solve during the programme. "If you cannot name the decision you want to get right," one faculty member said, "wait a year until you can."

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours.
