Arab Leadership University Opens the Doctor of Education for Leaders Who Will Keep Their Jobs

Arab Leadership University has opened admissions for the Doctor of Education. It is a professional doctorate for people who lead in education systems — school principals, college deans, curriculum leads, ministry officers, training directors — and who intend to keep leading while they research.

The programme begins by making candidates scholar-practitioners: modules in the learning sciences, education policy and equity, organisational change in education settings, and ethics and professional judgement. It then moves through improvement science and programme evaluation, qualitative inquiry, quantitative methods and measurement, and mixed-methods design, before a research proposal defence and the dissertation.

The rule that shapes everything is that the thesis must address a problem the candidate can actually influence. "We are not interested in a thesis about a school the candidate no longer works in," said the Director of Doctoral Education. "The point of a professional doctorate is that the researcher stays and changes the system."

Mona Darwish, a school principal in Jeddah, is investigating how teacher feedback cycles can be shortened without lowering marking quality — a question she is directly responsible for answering at her own school.

Candidates are trained in the specific ethics of researching your own staff and students: managing conflicts of interest, real consent when you hold power over participants, and keeping data under the rules that apply in the candidate's country.

The EdD is delivered online with zero tuition. Supervision is monthly and remote; the viva is online before a panel with an independent examiner. Examination and administrative charges are published in advance, and exam sponsorship is available on application.

The School of Education publishes a digest of completed theses so that other leaders can reuse methods rather than lift conclusions out of context. Applicants submit a research outline, evidence of senior education practice, and postgraduate-standard writing. A preparatory methods course is available for applicants who need to strengthen research design first.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours.
