DBA or PhD? Arab Leadership University Explains Which Doctorate Fits Which Career
Arab Leadership University offers two business doctorates that are often confused. The Doctoral College has published guidance so applicants choose on evidence rather than title.
The Doctor of Business Administration is a 54-credit programme over three to four years for senior executives who want to produce practitioner-focused research. It has a taught first year — applied doctoral research, philosophy of science, organisational strategy, advanced organisational behaviour, global management, and business ethics — followed by two structured research-methods years and a dissertation. The dissertation must address a problem the candidate is authorised to influence in their own organisation or sector.
The PhD in Business Administration is a 60-credit programme over three to five years for people aiming at an academic or research career. It is lighter on taught content, heavier on original contribution to theory, and expects publication in peer-reviewed journals during candidature.
"If your goal is to change practice in an industry you already work in, the DBA is the honest choice," the guidance says. "If your goal is a faculty post or a research-institute career, the PhD is the honest choice. Choosing the DBA because it sounds more senior, or the PhD because it sounds more prestigious, leads to a miserable three years."
Both are supervised intensively: monthly research clinics, recorded methods workshops, a named supervisor and a second reader. Both end with an online viva before a panel that includes an independent examiner, with the rubric issued in advance. Both are delivered online with zero tuition; examination and administrative charges are published, and exam sponsorship is available.
Mona Darwish, a school principal in Jeddah, chose the professional doctorate route in education for the same reason the guidance describes: "I am not leaving my school. I want to research a problem I am actually responsible for."
The Doctoral College also runs the PhD programmes in computer science, data science, public health and education, and the Doctor of Education. Applicants for any of them submit a research outline, evidence of relevant experience, and academic writing at postgraduate standard. Preparatory research-methods short courses are available through the open academy.
Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. ALU will not pretend a programme is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.
Arab Leadership University is an independent Arab digital university with no campus to relocate to. Founded in 2020, it publishes news that is operational rather than ceremonial: what changed in a programme, who can apply, how assessment works, and how global students get help. Every programme is delivered fully online; there is no campus, and no student is asked to relocate. Questions about the claims in this article should go to the office named as author above.
